When we pray, we talk to God; when we read, God talks to us.
St. Isidore
These are the two prayer methods you will learn at our Week of Guided Prayer.
IGNATIAN CONTEMPLATION
Ignatian Contemplation calls for one to be immersed in a scene, especially a Gospel scene to encounter and interact with Jesus Christ using all of one's senses and imagination before having a conversation with him. Also known as Imaginative Contemplation, this prayer method was developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola based on his own prayer experiences.
LECTIO DIVINA
Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) is an ancient form of prayer practised by early Christians who gathered to hear the Word of God and then meditated on these Scripture passages to listen to God with their hearts.
Praying the Lectio Divina method involves four step or movements:
Reading (Lectio)
Reading a passage from the bible a few times to allow a word or phrase to touch one's heart.
Meditating (Meditatio)
Meditate on the word or phrase to discover how it relates to one's life.
Praying (Oratio)
Talk to God about one's mediation and pay attention to promptings in one's heart.
Resting (Contemplatio)
Rest in God's love and embrace.

IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY
Ignatian Spirituality is a Catholic spirituality founded on the experiences of the sixteenth-century theologian and founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), St. Ignatius of Loyola. The main idea of this spirituality comes from Ignatius' Spiritual Exercises, the aim of which is to help one "conquer oneself and to regulate one's life in such a way that no decision is made under the influence of any inordinate attachment." The Exercises are intended to give the person making the decision a greater degree of freedom from his/her own likes and dislikes, so that the choice is based solely on discernment of God's will for him/her.
Ignatian spirituality is rooted in the conviction that God is active, personal, and above all, present to us. We, therefore can "find God in all things". Learn more about Ignatian Spirituality programmes at Kingsmead Centre, Singapore.
THE EXAMEN
Developed by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Examen is a practice of prayerful reflection on the events of the day or week that allows us to sense God's presence and discern his direction for us.
This simple prayer is made up of 5 steps:
-
Become aware of God's presence around you
-
Review your day with gratitude
-
Pay attention to your emotions
-
Choose one feature of the day and pray from it
-
Look towards tomorrow
